Presentation
The Prize of the President of the Republic for World Solidarity is a Tunisian contribution to reinforcing and anchoring the principle of solidarity among states and peoples.
This principle is, in our days, considered as an essential factor to remedy the causes of the dangers threatening sustainable human development, particularly the aggravation of the inequalities between rich and poor countries, with the resulting tragedies, conflicts and feelings of despair and frustration which jeopardize peace and stability in the world.
It is within this spirit that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Tunisia, inspired by the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, by the successful Tunisian experience in the field of solidarity, and by the positive results of the establishment of the National Solidarity Fund (26-26), proposed, in 1999, the creation of a World Solidarity Fund, whose primordial objective consists in contributing to the eradication of poverty and the promotion of social and human development in the most destitute regions of the world.
This deeply humanist proposal won the support of the international community and was unanimously adopted by the 57th session of the UN General Assembly (Resolution 57/265 of December20,2002).
